Human Papilloma Vaccine

HPV Vaccine (Gardasil)

There are more than 30 types of HPV that affect the genital area.  Young adults between 15 and 29 years are at highest risk.

Limiting the number of sexual partners and regular use of condoms can help prevent HPV infection in both males and females. Having regular Pap tests and vaccination are important ways to help prevent HPV infection in females.

The HPV vaccine is almost 100% effective in preventing infection of four HPV types, which are responsible for 70% of cervical cancer cases and 90% of genital warts. This vaccine is currently available for girls and young women aged 9 through 26 years.

The HPV vaccine is funded for Grade 7 students in Ontario. It is also covered by most drug plans. Three doses of the vaccine are required for full protection. More information can be found on the Health Unit Fact Sheet.
