Gestational Hypertension and Pre-eclampsia

GESTATIONAL HYPERTENSION

Hypertension is another word for high blood pressure. This is when your blood pressure is greater than 140 over 90. Gestational hypertension is high blood pressure during pregnancy. It is the most common complication during pregnancy, happening in 5% of all pregnancies and 10% of all first time pregnancies.

Risk factors 
• first pregnancy
• history of high blood pressure 
• under 20 years of age or over 40 years of age 
• family history of gestational hypertension 
All pregnant individuals are monitored for gestational hypertension as your health care provider will regularly check your blood pressure and your urine for protein.

PRE-ECLAMPSIA

Pre-eclampsia is a serious condition with high blood pressure and protein in your urine after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Symptoms
Symptoms include severe headaches, upper belly pain, vision problems, and unusual swelling. 

Risk factors
• being pregnant with more than one baby 
• history of pre-eclampsia 
• medical conditions such as high blood pressure or kidney disease

Management
You will be monitored closely, required to rest, and may need to take medication. You may be admitted to hospital for treatment and monitoring.
