Prenatal Dental Care

Pregnancy is an important time to have a regular dental check up. Have a regular dental check up in your first trimester. Hormonal changes can affect your teeth and gums. You may notice your gums are more sensitive, swollen or bleed. Pregnant people with tooth decay or gum disease are at a higher risk of preterm birth or a low birth weight baby.
Pregnancy gingivitis can happen between the third and ninth month and usually disappears after the baby is born. Gently brush with a soft toothbrush and floss regularly. Morning sickness can leave stomach acids in your mouth. If you do vomit rinse your mouth with water or fluoride mouth rinse. Talk to your dentist if you have concerns. Any needed follow up dental work is best done in the second trimester. X-rays should only be done if it is an emergency.
