Health Unit Supports and Services

Student health and well-being requires support at multiple levels. We help schools to plan and deliver Healthy Schools initiatives that benefit the whole school community. We do not provide individual mental health counselling services for students.

Public Health Nurses provide tailored support to help schools address their identified health and well-being goals using a comprehensive health promotion approach. This includes:

  • meeting with school leaders and staff to listen to their needs and goals,
  • providing credible health information, resources, and consultation,
  • raising awareness and sharing ideas to help address priority health topics,
  • encouraging inclusive approaches that promote health equity for all students and their families, and
  • partnering with other members of the school, health unit and community for greater impact.

The Ontario Ministry of Education provides direction to school boards (via PPM 161) to have policies and procedures in place to support children and students with certain medical conditions in schools, including Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Diabetes and Epilepsy.

We do not offer training or nursing care to individual students related to medical conditions.

Schools are encouraged to review their School Board policies and procedures pertaining to the prevention and management of anaphylaxis and other prevalent medical conditions, including training requirements. Additional information and resources are available on the Ministry of Education website.
