Prescription drugs are medications that are provided by healthcare providers to treat specific illnesses or conditions and are meant to be used as prescribed. They can however be used in other ways—that is, taken by someone other than the person it was prescribed for, or taken in a manner or dosage other than what was recommended. When taken in a way other than intended, prescription medications can produce serious health effects, including dependence and potential substance use disorder.
