LESSON #1
PREGNANT WOMEN AT RISK OF NOT BREASTFEEDING

Women at Risk of Not Breastfeeding

Even though it is widely accepted by breastfeeding experts and the community in general that there are many benefits of breastfeeding, many disadvantaged women do not start breastfeeding, or discontinue breastfeeding in the first few days or weeks. According to The Canadian Institute of Child Health (1996) breastfeeding rates are the lowest among women who have one or more of the following:

  • lower levels of education
  • younger maternal age
  • lower income
  • smoke

In Simcoe County, 25% of women surveyed (2002) had one or more of these risk factors.
