LESSON #1
PREGNANT WOMEN AT RISK OF NOT BREASTFEEDING

Misinformation, fear and lack of support could all affect a woman's decision to breastfeed. If she receives accurate information, and the support she needs during her pregnancy, it is possible for her to overcome these "barriers" and have a positive breastfeeding experience.

Other Barriers in our Society

  • Marketing of breasts as sexual objects
  • Societal value placed on independence and freedom
  • Promotion of breastmilk alternatives (e.g. formula)
  • Inaccurate, inconsistent information about breastfeeding
  • Financial need for women to return to work

Addressing breastfeeding barriers in our society is a big job. Breastfeeding advocates must work with businesses and government to create a culture that is supportive of breastfeeding.
