LESSON #1 PREGNANT WOMEN AT RISK OF NOT BREASTFEEDING
Breastfeeding in Canada
Generally breastfeeding initiation rates in Canada are higher in the west and slowly decline as you move east into Ontario. Rates are significantly
lower in Quebec and this decline continues into the Maritime provinces.
Breastfeeding in Simcoe County
The Simcoe County
Infant Feeding Survey was completed in 2003. The results show that
91% of Simcoe County women surveyed initiate breastfeeding. Fifty-two
percent of women in Simcoe County are breastfeeding their babies at
6 months. Despite high initiation and duration rates in the general
population of Simcoe County, there is still much work to be done. Nine
percent of women in our county do not give their baby any breastmilk,
and many others start out breastfeeding, but stop in the first few weeks.
Most of these women have one or more of the risk factors mentioned previously.
