LESSON #3
INFORMED DECISION MAKING

Three Easy Steps to Discussing Breastfeeding

Step 1: Ask open-ended questions about breastfeeding.

“What have you heard about breastfeeding?”
“What do you know about breastfeeding?”
“What do you think of when someone mentions breastfeeding?”
“What are your feelings about breastfeeding?”

Ask follow-up questions to get a better understanding of what the mother means. (This is a critical step, and often more difficult than the first open-ended question! Keep trying though!)

“Can you tell me more about that, Cindy?”

“When you say it will be embarrassing, do you mean for you or for people who might see you?”

“So what you’re saying is, your mother didn’t have a great breastfeeding experience so she might find it hard to support you?

“Would you tell me what else you’ve heard about breastfeeding?”
