LESSON #3
INFORMED DECISION MAKING

Three Easy Steps to Discussing Breastfeeding

Step 3: Share appropriate information and refer mother to a breastfeeding expert

Only provide information related to the concerns she has expressed.

Give her small amounts of information at one time – she may already be feeling overwhelmed by all she has to learn to prepare for a new baby.

Refer to breastfeeding experts and community resources.

“Most often when breastfeeding is painful, it’s because the baby is not positioned well. The public health nurse can show you how to breastfeed so that it doesn’t hurt, and the lactation consultant in the hospital can help you once the baby is born.”

“You’ll be able to tell if your baby is getting enough milk by counting his wet/dirty diapers, and watching for other signs. The public health nurse would go over this with you, and give you the support you need.”
