COVID-19 Vaccine Eligibility

COVID-19 vaccine recommendations are based on an individual's current age, health status, and COVID-19 vaccine history.  Please see below for current recommendations.

Infants/Children 6 months to <5 years

  • 2-dose series of KP.2 Moderna vaccine, given 8 weeks apart
  • Those who started but did not complete a COVID-19 vaccine series should complete the series using the recommended number of doses of Moderna KP.2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, based on the vaccine product and numbers of doses received in the past.

Individuals 5 years and older

  • One dose of a KP.2 vaccine is recommended (an additional dose is recommended for those who are moderately to severely immunocompromised).

Most individuals (6 months of age and older) need one dose of KP.2 formulation this fall.

For previously vaccinated individuals, the recommended interval is 6 months from the last COVID-19 vaccine dose and a minimum of 3 months from the last dose may be used.

Individuals may consider delaying COVID-19 immunization by 3 to 6 months in circumstances where recent test-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection is known for previously vaccinated individuals.

Available Vaccines

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), recommends mRNA vaccines as the preferred vaccine type for all age groups.

The type of mRNA vaccine you will receive depends on current inventory and your age.

  • Moderna Omicron KP.2 variant: 6 months of age and older
  • Pfizer BioNTech Omicron KP.2 variant: 12 years of age and older

The updated protein subunit COVID-19 vaccine, Novavax, will not be available in Ontario for the 2024/2025 season.  Individuals who are unable to receive an mRNA vaccine should speak with their health care provider about treatment options to reduce the duration and severity of illness.
