LESSON #4
PROTECTING, PROMOTING AND SUPPORTING BREASTFEEDING

The Baby-Friendly™ Initiative

What is the Baby-Friendly™ Initiative (BFI)?

The BFI is a global campaign of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). It was developed to help hospitals and community agencies work towards increasing breastfeeding initiation and duration rates by protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding.

The principles underlying the BFI are summarized in the "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding".

'Baby-Friendly™' is considered 'best-practice' for agencies working with pregnant and/or parenting families.
